Aviram Sharma works as a Senior Researcher at the Post-Growth Innovation Lab at the University of Vigo, Spain. He is an interdisciplinary researcher whose research interests fall on the interface of STS (Science, Technology and Society Studies), Environmental Studies, and Development Studies.
Prior to joining U Vigo, he was an Assistant Professor at the School of Ecology and Environment Studies at Nalanda University, India, from 2015 to 2023. Before that, he worked in different capacities with the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, UK and Jawaharlal Nehru University, India between 2014-2015. He holds an M.Phil. and a Ph.D. degree in Science Policy from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and a Master's degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Delhi, India.
He is a Senior Research Fellow at the Earth System Governance Project and Faculty Affiliate at Climate Social Science Network, Brown University, and Ostrom Workshop, at Indiana University, USA. He has held visiting positions at the Centre for Research in Economic Sociology and Innovation (CRESI), Department of Sociology, University of Essex, UK; at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Science, Technology and Society (IAS-STS), Graz, Austria and at the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany.
He serves on the Editorial Board of several reputed journals, such as the Bulletin of Science, Technology, and Society (Sage), International Journal of Qualitative Methods (Sage), Humanities and Social Sciences Communications (Springer Nature), Societal Impacts (Elsevier), and Sustainable Horizons (Elsevier); besides, he is working as an Associate Editor for Heliyon – Society and Politics Section (Cell Press) and for Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences (Springer). He has been part of the editorial collective of two mega book projects, SDGs in the Asia and Pacific Region (Springer), and Exploring Hope: Case Studies of Innovation, Change and Development in the Global South (Emerald, UK). His research has been published in Energy Research & Social Science, Public Understanding of Science, Habitat International, Water International, Science, Technology and Society, Area Development and Policy, and several other international journals and edited volumes published by reputed publishers such as Oxford University Press, Routledge, Springer, Bristol University Press, Nomos.
His research aims to address two broad sets of questions; one strand engages with the democratisation of decision-making and emerging multi-scale environmental governance landscape, and the other deals with the politics of sustainability in the global south.
